Obituary for Burton H. Albee

Burton H. Albee
Burton Albee, 99, of Manchester, Connecticut, and Winter Garden, Florida, died peacefully on Feb. 25, 2017, at Health Central Park in Winter Garden, where he resided since 2011. Born in 1917 in West Roxbury, Massachusetts, Burt attended Mechanic Arts High School, then MIT, and transferred to University of Maine, where he graduated in 1940 with an Engineering degree. He accepted a position with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, and relocated to the Hartford area.

In 1945 Burt met Irene Pitkin of East Hartford. They married in 1947 and moved to Manchester, where they raised four children, participated in local activities and organizations, and enjoyed being part of their neighborhoods and the community. Burt worked for P&WA/UT for 41 years, achieving the position of Chief of Quality Assurance. After his retirement, life became relaxed, and Burt and Irene spent more time with their friends and relatives, taking daytrips around Southern New England and especially to Fenway Park.

Burt was pre-deceased by Irene, who he cared for during her 8-year fight against Alzheimer’s disease. She died in 2006, their 59th year of marriage. Their daughter Elizabeth died of breast cancer in 1995.

Burt collected retirement benefits for almost 36 years, and the only prescription drug he took in all that time was a daily pill to prevent gout! Bedridden since 2010 after a bad fall, he became well-known in the nursing home for his colorful monologues about growing up in Boston (including digging clams at Adams Shore for pocket change from Mr. Howard Johnson!) and for his droll Yankee wit. Burt made many friends there, and seemed both comfortable and satisfied with his daily life. When asked how he enjoyed Florida, he would quip that he’d rather live in a tent in Maine!

Burt is survived by his loving family, including three children and their spouses: John and Beth (Horrobin) Albee of Austin, Texas, Ed and Marianne (Albee) DiAntonio of Ocoee, Florida, and Peter and Lisa (Spaulding) Albee of Plantation, Florida, six grandchildren: Sean Albee, Ian Kellogg, Alex DiAntonio, Jen (Albee) Payne, Emma DiAntonio, and Vicky Albee, and three great-grandchildren. We all want to thank Dad/Grandpa for including us in his gene pool!

A memorial service, TBD, will be private. Burt’s favored charity is the Silent Spring Institute of Newton, MA, which investigates environmental causes for breast cancer.
