My father work long hours to provide all that we needed in life. He spent his life savings to keep my mother as comfortable as possible until her passing in Febuary 1959 from Liver cancer. He made sure we were in church every week growing up, providing us with a firm foundation for our faith in God. Dad and his sister "Aunt Em" cared lovingly for us and helped steer us through many trials and tribulations in life. Always there for us no matter what, my dad will be greatly missed.

Story shared: Pop Pop and the Purple Crayon

I know the Veit's all remember the incident….. When visiting Pop Pop one weekend about 30 years ago, I was strongly encouraged by my Dad to take a nap. After Dad and Pop got me settled in a yellow bedroom, I drifted. Well, make that, drifted into my pocket where I retrieved a purple crayon and proceeded to color the yellow walls purple! I don’t recall Pop Pop’s reaction, I remember Dad’s, enough said! But, in my mind, this story does not end with the yellow wall and purple crayon. A short time later Pop Pop moved from that house to Gallagher Rd. where he had his own apartment on at the top of the steps. And whenever Nicole and I would go and visit, in spite of my previous performance, Pop Pop kept a large box (my favorite kind, the one with the sharpener built in) of Crayola® crayons and coloring books. He kept them safety tucked away in a dresser drawer. I was always so impressed! When I reflect back on those visits, I always think ‘I can’t believe Pop Pop was brave enough to keep crayons on hand for me in spite of my performance!!’ My childhood memories are of mostly of visits to Gallagher road and they are all happy, pleasant memories I will remember always. Now, as an adult, wife, and mother (who has wrestled more than one crayon away from my son, Patrick), I happily think of Pop Pop, at ‘home’ in Heaven with his Wife whom loved and lost so many years ago. Story shared: Pop Pop Visits

It has been many years since I have seen Pop-Pop. But, I do have some of the same memories of my sister with the coloring books and crayons. The coloring books were always so big (poster size) and there was always a new one when we went for visits. I remember Pop-Pop always peeling me an apple when I visited. I was always amazed at how he could peel the apple and the skin would be one long piece. He always gave that to me first. To this day, I am unable to peel an apple that way. I remember fondly of our trips to Zerns, where we always got soft pretzels first. I knew my visit with Pop would always have pretzels and root beer involved. He is the reason for my love of root beer. Pop, I hope that your eternal life is filled with pretzels and root beer. We will miss you here, but we know that you are at peace. God Bless you. Our condolences to the entire Veit Family on the loss of their Dad and grandad Fred. We remember many visits with Fred and Auntie Em at Roger and Rita's home in Swedeland when the children were young. May your happy times together sustain you all in your time of grief.
